COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

PBL CURRICULUM FOR GRADES 6 – 12

Young people care deeply about the challenges they see around them, inequality, safety, access, opportunity.

But most don’t know how to turn that awareness into action.

The Community Organizing PBL curriculum equips youth with the tools, mindset, and leadership skills to identify real community issues, mobilize others, and create meaningful change.

Through hands-on, project-based learning, students don’t just learn about leadership, they practice it in real life.

What youth will do

Through a structured project-based learning process, students will:

  • Identify a community issue by exploring challenges in their school or neighborhood, social, economic, or environmental concerns, and issues that matter to them personally. They learn to analyze problems deeply and thoughtfully.
  • Build a team and shared mission by forming teams around a shared cause, defining a mission and vision, and learning how to collaborate effectively. This fosters ownership, accountability, and collective leadership.
  • Conduct research on systems and solutions by examining policies connected to their issue, analyzing existing solutions and gaps, and gathering data and perspectives from their community. Through this process, they develop a deeper understanding of how change happens at a systemic level.
  • Design and launch an action plan to create and implement community campaigns, awareness initiatives, advocacy projects, and events or outreach efforts. They learn how to mobilize others and bring ideas to life.
  • Present their impact by showcasing their work to peers, leaders, or community members, sharing their campaign outcomes, and reflecting on their leadership journey. This builds confidence, ownership, and real-world experience.
