HEALTH & WELLNESS
PBL CURRICULUM FOR GRADES 3 – 12

Today’s youth are facing rising stress, mental health challenges, and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Educators and youth programs are searching for practical ways to help young people build healthier lives and stronger communities.

The Health & Wellness PBL Curriculum equips students in Grades 3–12 with the knowledge, skills, and leadership mindset to understand health holistically and take meaningful action in their communities.

Through research, collaboration, and real-world projects, students learn how physical health, mental health, and social well-being are deeply connected and how they can become leaders who promote healthier communities.

Why this curriculum works

Build Health Literacy That Lasts

Students explore the health triangle — physical, mental, and social well-being to understand how everyday choices affect their lives and communities.

They learn to:

  • Recognize the impact of stress, nutrition, and lifestyle habits

  • Understand mental health and break stigma

  • Identify health challenges in their own neighborhoods

  • Design solutions that promote healthier communities

Health education in schools is critical because early health habits strongly influence long-term well-being and life outcomes.

Develop Leadership and Real-World Skills

This project-based learning curriculum doesn’t just teach health concepts—it helps youth practice leadership and problem solving.

Students build:

  • Critical thinking

  • Research skills

  • Public speaking

  • Collaboration

  • Digital media literacy

  • Community engagement

These skills prepare youth to become health advocates and community changemakers.

"Project-based learning has always provided a positive experience for both my students and myself. Students are able to take abstract world problems and personalize them for themselves, and their experiences. Project-based learning helps students create real-life solutions and takes a large and general idea, and turn it into actionable and personal work for the individual."

– Educator, July, 2020

What youth will do

Through a structured project-based learning process, students will:

  • Explore real health issues such as nutrition and exercise, mental health and stigma, the obesity epidemic and systemic factors, and the impact of social media on well-being.
  • Conduct community research through surveys, interviews and focus groups, explore health resources in their neighborhoods and analyze local health challenges.
  • Create a public health campaign by designing solutions and communicate them through public service announcements, digital presentations, community awareness campaigns, and video storytelling.
  • Present their solutions to peers, experts, or community leaders.
